  • A rice cooker or rice steamer is a self-contained tabletop kitchen appliance for cooking rice. There are electrical and gas powered versions. The term can also refer to a container designed for cooking rice in a microwave oven. Dedicated rice cookers date from the earliest of times.

Try as I might, with my severe allergies (nuts) and my travels for work, it is often not possible to be vegetarian all the time. Not only because of my health but because of the rituals around food which can make refusing meat difficult in some countries*, and simple rules in others (in countries where you can't drink the water, no salad) that can make eating more complicated than it ought to be.

As a compromise, I eat vegetarian where possible at home, and am flexible on the road. In January which is usually a quieter month travel-wise for me, I follow a strictly vegetarian diet. Today's lunch is steamed Teriyaki vegetables with mixed rice.

* Some examples: I hadn't eaten beef in nearly a decade until in Peru last June a kebab was put on my plate by a colleague. It would have been very rude to refuse.

In Cameroon I ate pretty well - lots of plantain, yam, rice, corn and okra, but I did politely refuse the street-stall chicken.

A vegetarian salad in Kyiv had an unknown nut that saw me scrambling for the Benadryl.

In Japan, I indulged in pretty much everything where fish was concerned. Japanese is my favourite cuisine, and I could not resist the sashimi. Likewise in Finland, to avoid the reindeer, I ate a lot of salmon.

Here is the area of the kitchen behind the fridge. Starting from the left is a yogurt maker that Kim got in May for her birthday. The top is melted but we saved the bottom, although we're still unsure if it works. Next to that is a toaster oven that we couldn't get clean so we ended up throwing it away. On top of that is a variety of snack foods that Kim's sister and nephew had left there. Next to the toaster oven is our rice cooker that we also threw away. Behind that is our wood cutting board that also wouldn't come clean. Next to the rice cooker and not fully visible here is a crock pot which was salvageable but the knob for the controls somehow went missing so now we have to use pliers to turn it on.
